Twenty-seven organizations participated in the 2012 KIPP Leadership Design Fellowship (KLDF). This was the first time that more than a dozen large urban school districts have participated in a leadership institute run by a charter school network.

Participants included 16 school districts, 3 charter management organizations, and 8 leadership training/education organizations:

Summit I: Principal Recruitment, Selection & Developing a Leadership Pipeline
March 20-22 in Houston, TX
Participants explored best practices in creating a leadership pipeline and recruiting high-value and high-alignment
candidates with intensive sessions focused on designing a selection process
that reflects organizational values and aligned principal competencies. They visited KIPP Houston schools to see leaders and culture in action, and
experienced part of KIPP’s annual Fisher Fellow selection process
including observing candidate interviews and using KIPP’s interview
rubrics.
Summit II: Principal Training & Residencies
June 26-28 in Chicago, IL
Participants explored best practices in
formal training, including adult learning principles, individualized leadership
plans, leadership coaching, and high-value residency training experiences for
principals. They attended a portion of KIPP’s “Summer Institute,” experiencing a slice of the
five-week intensive formal training program for aspiring principals from the
seat of a participant.
Summit III: Principal Support & Evaluation
October 9-11 in Atlanta, GA
Participants explored effective on-going support for and evaluation of
principals, including leveraging school reviews and a variety of data (informed
by KIPP’s Healthy Schools & Regions framework) to provide meaningful
developmental feedback for principals as well as how to effectively evaluate
programs. They visited
KIPP Atlanta schools in “review teams,” conducting classroom observations and
stakeholder focus groups, using KIPP’s school review rubrics.
